My Approach

My approach to coaching draws on my clinical counselor training and 13 years of experience working (coaching, counseling, teaching) with individuals in various venues to become a more integrated, present and connected person. When an individual moves toward a growing self-awareness of how they relate to others, they become less reactive, more grounded and have a greater sense of clarity and purpose. Since we are deeply relational beings, our presence impacts (positively or negatively) those we are in relationship with (colleagues, friends, partner, children, etc.). I also believe we are relationally consistent, meaning there are identifiable patterns in how we show up that cuts across how people experience us in every venue (large meetings, giving or receiving feedback, 1 on 1s, etc.). These patterns of relating are deeply ingrained because they are shaped during our early formative years. This is why symptom management or tactical quick fixes never go far enough for lasting change. We are complex human beings that cannot be reduced down to a simplistic view of behavior modification. Therefore a coaching relationship can provide a safe and confidential space for a person to increase self-awareness and utilize increased self awareness to improve both their personal and professional development.

I believe the existential challenges of work provide a fantastic opportunity for the process of change and growth. This is where my work with clients can be very helpful. Whether a person is trying to figure out how to manage through a difficult work relationship, understand self-sabotaging behaviors, deal with their anxiety, or process feedback that was surprising to them (what my professional language would call a glimpse into your style of relating), these and other lived experiences become the entry point to self-awareness and growth. This in turn can lead to moving away from unhelpful relational patterns and moving towards a way of relating that allows for more meaningful and productive interactions. If you are in a place of leadership and you choose to lead from this more mature and connected presence, it can have a profound impact on your team. When a team feels the spacious, non-reactive, and empathetic presence of their leader, there is more team interconnection, buy-in, higher job satisfaction, greater retention of top talent, increased organization citizenship and a greater sense of purpose among a team.

My approach to coaching is to create space for clients to see themselves more clearly and how they have learned to relate to themselves and others. The foundation for this relationship is based on trust, transparency and honesty. I see the coaching relationship as a collaborative relationship were we work together for a client’s personal growth and vocational development.
